Anne Dickson is an independent sales representative of clothing retailer Agnes and Dora. She is a working parent based out of Toronto who shared with us how she uses her coworking space to strike a balance between motherhood and entrepreneurship.
Q: What made you decide to ditch the traditional office place?
A: I have an online clothing boutique selling a clothing line called Agnes and Dora and my inventory is located in my house (basement work area). Traditional offices just don’t work due to costs of the office and the fact I’m never doing regular office hours. The Working Ensemble solved a lot of issues for me. The cost of two in daycare was high in downtown Toronto but there were times when I needed a space to work for a few hours without any toddlers or babies. Working ensemble has caregivers on site that are there to watch my kids while I go to work. Diane who runs the space has two children of her own so she gets what working parent life is like!
Q: Let’s talk about “work/life balance” – what does that look like for you?
A: I don’t have any life balance to be honest! I love working and selling clothing and when I’m not with my kids I’m working! There are times when my business isn’t as busy (summer, the week after Christmas) so I take breaks then. I also have things scheduled like my son has a PA day at school so I know that day means I’m not working, I get to spend the day with him.
Q: What advice would you have given yourself before you started your business?
A: I would have reached out for help as soon as possible. Outsourcing tasks like book keeping, accounting, website design etc. Don’t wing it, get help. I would also recommend business coaches and mindset coaches.
Q: How did you first come up with the idea for your business or a recent project?
A: I was on maternity leave with my second child and having trouble finding clothes that fit me. My body had changed, nothing fit and going to the mall and changing in a change room sounded like a nightmare. I stumbled upon it by accident when I found someone in the US who was an independent sales representative for a clothing company called Agnes and Dora. It had clothes with sizes XXS to XXXL and was comfortable and stylish. I immediately signed up to sell the clothing and I loved it! When my maternity leave was over (Canada you get a full year) I decided not to return to 9-5 work and do this and be with my children.
Q: What’s your biggest challenge as an entrepreneur?
A: It’s easier in some ways to get a 9-5 job and have a steady stream of money coming in! I think what’s challenging is that I’m the only person responsible for my business.
